The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller My rating: 3 of 5 stars 2.75 The prose is beautifully written, but considering this is a reimagining of already existing stories, I really expected something more interesting and engaging. Action and characterization are glossed over, as well as the brutality of war and slavery. The author almost wants to hide all that so it becomes the background of a love story, but it doesn’t really work well to ignore the context. View all my reviews

A quick, fun, and unpretentious read. Most of the characters are well written and interesting, with the sad sole exception of Clara. (why!?)

The book was fun and I would recommend it to anyone, but for me it didn't quite hit the emotional notes I think it was going for. The sentimentality is a little forced and predictable. At times it felt almost like the authors diary made into a book, like maybe he was working through some things in therapy and decided to write about it, but it wasn't relatable to me.

Feels like he was trying to write a Fredrik Backman novel but wasn't quite skilled enough as a writer. Enjoyable, just not the best. Still worth checking out.
