The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller My rating: 3 of 5 stars 2.75 The prose is beautifully written, but considering this is a reimagining of already existing stories, I really expected something more interesting and engaging. Action and characterization are glossed over, as well as the brutality of war and slavery. The author almost wants to hide all that so it becomes the background of a love story, but it doesn’t really work well to ignore the context. View all my reviews

A devastating memoir written by someone who is clearly so used to being emotionally and physically abused that they don’t even realize how deep it goes.

Difficult to read at times because of the blame she puts on herself for the abuse she’s suffering at the hands of others, and for the clear ties from her mothers emotional neglect to her losing her daughter to a man she talks up soooo much who clearly doesn’t care much for her.

The mixed reviews made me nervous to read this one, but Viewed as a longitudinal study of one human instead of as a celebrity memoir of “tea” it’s an enlightening read.
